Good question. There is a misconception that a house must be ‘leaky’ in order to allow fresh air in. The air that typically enters a leaky house, enters through high and low leaks – the attic and the crawl space. Air from those sources cannot be considered fresh or necessarily good for your health. Air sealing a house not only saves energy it is also critical to providing good indoor air quality.
A super tight house should have a mechanical ventilation system that is sufficient for the design and size of that particular house. This may be something as simple as fans. A more effective system is one that controls the incoming and the exhausted air.
Desert Rain is fitted with an Energy Recovery Ventilator system that exchanges the energy contained in normally exhausted building or space air and preconditions the incoming outdoor ventilation air. An energy recovery ventilator features a heat exchanger combined with a ventilation system – an ‘air to air’ system. During warmer seasons, the system also pre-cools and dehumidifies. This technology has demonstrated an effective means of reducing energy cost and heating and cooling loads, with the benefit of improving indoor air quality.
